Photonic Design Engineer at Ayar Labs

The successful Photonics Design Engineer will be responsible for designing and characterizing a variety of passive and active integrated photonics devices, primarily in a commercial silicon-on-insulator process. Responsibilities include taking device designs all the way from simulation to prototyping to experimental validation. This includes electromagnetic simulation, design, layout, verification, design of experiment, and analysis of measurements. Work as a part of a small team in a dynamic startup environment, driving high-performance photonic designs. 

Key Responsibilities: 
  • Designing photonic devices and test structures to measure and optimize performance (propagation loss, bend loss, tapered waveguide transitions, polarization splitter/rotators, etc.)
  • Analyzing measurement results to validate simulation models
  • Translating practical foundry limitations to robust photonic designs
Additional Responsibilities: 
  • Collaborate closely with manufacturing team to incorporate design for test (DFT) and design for manufacturability (DFM) at early stages in the design cycle
  • Develop compact models for photonic components for use in mixed-signal circuit simulations
  • Use statistical techniques to develop models and understand the impact of foundry process corners on photonic devices
About You: 
  • Ph.D. in electrical engineering, physics, or related field with a focus on photonic device design
  • 5+ years of working/research experience
  • Experienced with electromagnetic simulations in standard software suites (FDTD, modesolvers, FMM, etc.)
  • Proficient with standard scientific computing tools and data analysis (Python, Matlab)
  • Familiar with Linux/Unix
  • Familiar with modern version control workflows (e.g. Git)
  • Excited about the prospect of contributing to the development of a new technology
