Mechanical Designer - Semiconductor/Optics

This is a Part Time position, 20 hours per week. 
Ayar Labs is developing cutting-edge optical I/O technology to remove electrical I/O bottlenecks and continue the performance scaling that Moore’s Law enabled until now.  Our team consists of experts in circuit design, integrated photonics, laser engineering, and packaging.
 
The successful candidate will work under engineering direction to perform mechanical design for cross-functional groups within the company.

Essential Functions:
  • Mechanical design of silicon-photonic and laser package and system components
  • Mechanical design of fiber array and fiber routing
  • Design tooling fixtures for optical and electrical assembly and test
  • Create and manage engineering changes to implement parts, assemblies, and bill of materials
  • Assign drawing and part numbers as needed
  • Perform tolerance stack-ups to ensure assembly and fabrication capabilities
  • Coordinate prototype orders with vendors
Basic Requirements:
  • Associates degree in Mechanical Design Engineering or Technology; or equivalent experience
  • 3 years of Semiconductor or opto-mechanics industry experience in Mechanical Design
  • Proficient in CAD design with SolidWorks
  • Technical expertise and knowledge of mechanical engineering principles and practices
  • Must be able to work both independently and as a team player, meeting tight delivery schedules, and juggling multiple simultaneous project assignments
  • Position requires video and phone conferencing, communicating with company provided instant messaging systems, email, etc.
  • Expected travel to headquarters 1-2 times per year
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Experience with optical and flip chip assembly
  • Experience with optical fiber routing
  • Knowledge of rapid prototyping, and design-for-manufacture
  • Communication skills for driving critical design decisions
